The design aims to set up a dialogical relationship with both the landscape and the city by deploying various compositional strategies: framing, unveiling, mimicking, camouflaging, bracketing, and editing.  The tone ranges from silent reserve to exuberant idiosyncrasy. Since the site is on an extreme slope, the inevitable problem of ‘cut and fill’ evolved as the main source of architectural preoccupation: at a technical level, how to balance the displacement of earth from one portion of the site to another, and at a representational level, how to ‘architecturalize’ the act of cutting into the earth as the paradigmatic image of the house. Thus, a wedge-like space –a virtual cone of vision –is cut into the landscape producing distinct perspectival relationships with both the mountain and the valley: foreshortening and intensifying the view towards the cut into the mountain and splaying out the vista towards the horizon, accentuating the horizontality of the valley.
