The hanging studio has been re-imagined as wearable art by Shereen Amin and Amanda Luu, students of Monash University’s Art, Design and Architecture program (MADA). ‘After painstakingly developing a gradient panelization system, thick and massive on one end while thin and suspended on the other, the Beaux Arts Ball rectified this trope by a classical tri-partite rendition with a base, shaft, and top section strategically aligned with figural protrusions.’ – Nader Tehrani

John Wardle, Stefan Mee and Nader discuss the Melbourne School of Design in issue 55 of MARK Magazine.

“I don’t think the building proclaims its pedagogical lessons in an overt form. The real lessons are to be learned in its intrinsic detail. It’s more about our hopes of inviting enough curiosity to have users examine the detail.” – John Wardle

Under construction in the heart of downtown Austin, Texas, a one-thousand four-hundred foot screen wall is taking shape. Situated along Shoal Creek and several adjacent developments including the New Central Library, the project helps to secure an active power station and create urban spaces along its perimeter. The wall will employ over eight hundred 8 x 8 x 12 foot tall integrally colored concrete posts with varying patterns and rotations.

The MSD in AR

John de Manincor reviews the Melbourne School of Design in this issue of Architectural Review Asia Pacific on newsstands now or subsribe here.

“Like a much-loved novel, this building will become better with age; when the pages are dog-eared and stained with red wine and coffee, it is likely to be even more intriguing. Pick it up again in a few years – it will remain significant and represent an ever-evolving history.”
