Archinect interviews Shawn Keller about CW Keller’s work and how they collaborate with architects.

“The best examples for us are firms like NADAAA, who we’ve worked with for 10 years. Nader Tehrani understands the value of talking with fabricators. Whether it’s us or a metal facade company or a glazing company, getting in and understanding what they do and how they do it informs his designs. He brings that collaboration and information to a lot of the designs that he’s doing.”

STOREFRONT FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE:

Letters-to-the-developer

“As part of this project, a select group of architects, curators, historians, and critics have each  been asked to write a letter to a New York City-based developer who should be recognized for making a positive contribution to public life. The letter articulates one exceptional act that the developer has carried out; an act that goes beyond common practice and that participants believe should become part of the norm.”

KATIE LECTURING AT THE 2016 AIA COLORADO PRACTICE AND DESIGN CONFERENCE

The AIA Colorado 2016 Practice+Design Conference is taking place Oct. 6-8, 2016 at the Copper Mountain Resort. Katie will lecture on Material Difference on Saturday at 1:45

The catalog of materials available to architects has never been more robust. The potential of things like synthetic spider webbing and bio-plastics render possible a near-future of 3d printed buildings. Yet most of us still paint within our comfort zone, using palettes of concrete, wood, brick, glass, and metal. Our projects demand deployment of readily available materials is ordinary ways so that a market of contractors with similar skills can compete on a level playing field. NADAAA is no exception. While our design ethos rests upon the bridge between research and practice, our ability to execute a project requires an understanding of the means and methods of construction. Assemblies that are seen as unique often translate into cost premiums, rendering them target for value engineering. As a solution, we have taken to making prototypes to optimize fabrication – using conventional materials in unconventional ways, and unconventional materials in conventional ways.
