100 International Architects of 2017

The Korean Institute of Architects named Katie and Nader among the world’s top 100 architects of 2017 with a special citation of the Daniels Building project for the University of Toronto. The project was part of an international exhibition recently held in Seoul.

Globe and Mail writer Dave Leblanc discusses the history of the circle where the new Daniels Building sits with Dean Sommer.

“So it’s a kind of witness to the transformation of the city but also this didactic or pedagogical lesson in architecture as something that starts out as uptight, British, a cloister for enlightenment, then becomes a laboratory, and now, let’s say, something creative,” Dean Sommer offers.

Katie at ‘Toronto Lost and Found’

Katie joined Dean Richard Sommer of the Daniels Faculty to welcome Toronto city staff and local designers for a tour of our new Daniels Building at One Spadina. They were joined by Michael McClelland of ERA Architects, the project’s heritage consultant. The tour was followed by a student-focused panel discussion “Toronto Lost and Found: Redefining the City’s Built Heritage” which included panelists Susan Macdonald, Patricia McCarney, Paul Bedford, and Mary MacDonald.

DFALD Featured in AA School of Architecture News

The University of Toronto Tops Maclean’s

Maclean’s has ranked the University of Toronto as Canada’s Top School by Reputation. In their article they site the Daniels Building:

“The most recent addition to U of T facilities is One Spadina, the new home of the John H. Daniels faculty of architecture, landscape and design. Designed by acclaimed architects Nader Tehrani and Katherine Faulkner, the glass-fronted, zigzagging concrete structure has been lauded by the Globe and Mail as “one of the best Canadian buildings of the past decade.”

DFALD featured in the New York Times

The New York Times lists DFALD among the new buildings making a mark. The article spotlights Nader who, along with Katie, has garnered critical accolades for the newly opened DFALD. This is the third architecture school Nader has designed.

“For Daniels, [NADAAA] floats an origami-like roof over a 110-foot-wide column-free room to create floodlit studio and social spaces below. A new circulation spine attempts to better link the building, which is set on a traffic roundabout, into the city.”

DFALD Featured in Metropolis

The Daniels Building is featured in Metropolis Magazine’s July/August print issue written by Alex Bozikovic.

“The question was, how do you not mimic the existing building, but speak to it in a corresponding way?” says Nader Tehrani of NADAAA. They found an answer: a new wing that shows, with forms that are spiky and radically contemporary, how design can deal with the past and also change the city.”
