DANIELS AND MSD FEATURED IN ARQUINE

Posted on June 25th, 2019 by Dara Lin

The Summer 2019 edition of Arquine examines the ability of architecture to show and to teach by taking a look at architecture schools around the world. Among the works featured are the Daniels Building and the Melbourne School of Design, both schools that inspire their occupants through their form and integration.

“[The Daniels Building], in bringing together restoration, renovation, and reinvention, is a hub for education, research, and outreach focused on the creation of more environmental, beautiful, and socially sustainable cities.”

“The building itself is a laboratory for experimentation and research…. self-explanatory in its operation and architecture, revealing a logic of construction layers as a pedagogical tool.”

MSD featured in ‘Evidence Based Design Journal’

Posted on May 2nd, 2018 by Nicole Sakr

Posted under: _Melbourne School of Design, Academic, Press

The Evidence Based Design Journal‘s aim is to bridge data-based research with current design practice, positively impacting the health and well-being of building occupants. Darragh O’Brien, managing editor of the journal has analyzed the Melbourne School of Design. Read his full review of the MSD–four years after its completion–HERE.

“In an iterative world, MSD now provides a tempting target for future detailed research into the relationship between collaborative activity and spatial organisation, where the void is the device by which we can create and perceive a complex network of relationships. Ideas are not forced, they brush off on us through constant exposure, over time.”

“THE STORY OF OUR RISE THROUGH VARIOUS PROJECT SCALES INTO THIS TERRITORY THAT WE NOW INHABIT IS A STORY OF RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE, THAT HAD THE CONFIDENCE TO ENGAGE WITH US. AS WE’VE GROWN, WE HAVE LOOKED VERY CAREFULLY AT INVITING OTHERS INTO THE PRACTICE THAT HAVE HAD PARTICULAR SKILLS, ALWAYS BROADENING OUR RANGE.”

This Building Likes Me: The Architectural Grain

Posted on October 14th, 2016 by Nicole Sakr

Nader contributed an essay entitled ‘The Architectural Grain to longtime collaborator John Wardle Architects’ THIS BUILDING LIKES ME book.

In what turned out to be a fortuitous turn of events, John Wardle was out of the country when we were to lecture together at the University of Melbourne – this in a bid to win the commission for the new Melbourne School of Design (MSD) building. John was unfazed, although he understood how important it was for us to speak as one on the same podium. Coming together – not as the traditional, international-local shotgun marriage, but as a true collaboration – we had yet to prove how we could bridge the Pacific to convene on the same conceptual platform. Sharing a common intuition, we had not actually worked together; we could only interpret commonalities through a series of projects that, in our minds, could be construed as blood relatives, no matter how far apart they were conceived and built.

Read on to see how NADAAA and JWA’s shared affinity of the ‘grain’ helped us form an unforgettable collaboration HERE.
