The Politics of Play: Nader on Hashim Sarkis’s work

“Sarkis demonstrates that to be politically effective, architecture must somehow operate through its autonomy, if only to show how its own techniques, tools, and devices, participate in building an imagination for the world”

“Consider the herringbone pattern that adorns the Balloon Landing structure in Beirut […] Here, the grain overcomes the traditional opposition between surface and depth, or structure and skin; the thinness of paint, the laminar nature of the wood lattice, and the depth of a concrete pour are brought to both material and sematic equation, as the herringbone becomes inextricably bound to the geological depths of the site onto which it is cast.”

SMALLER, SAFER, FAIRER: Steps towards closing Rikers

The Justice Implementation Task Force fully launched two weeks ago joined by NADAAA’s Dan Gallagher, with Working Groups on Safely Reducing the Jail Population, Culture Change and Design meeting to provide feedback and innovation to the City’s strategies to transform our justice system.

In a major step in configuring jails off Rikers Island, the city is inviting proposals for a master plan for a borough-based jail system for New York City. Starting with the three existing Department of Correction facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, the study will provide information on what is possible at each location, as well as help to identify additional sites, as needed, to house a population of 5,000 off-Island. The study will engage neighborhoods along with members of the Design Working Group of the Justice Implementation Task Force.

NORTH CURTAIN WALL GOING UP AT BEAVER

Posted on April 20th, 2017 by Gretchen Neeley

Posted under: _BEAVER R+D Center, Academic, construction

The expression of the vertical curtain wall framing members is pronounced before the glass is installed and remains clearly visible on the interior.

However, the final exterior expression of the north facade is to suppress all vertical framing by using a structural silicone joint. The horizontal joints are awaiting their custom profile caps.
